How we use other people's reporting
The register is built on journalism done by others. That imposes limits on what we reproduce, and we hold to them deliberately rather than as far as we can get away with.

We quote short and link out
A case carries a headline and one or two sentences describing what a source established, always with attribution and a link to the original. We do not reproduce full article text publicly, and we do not republish images from the reporting.
Traffic goes to the publisher. Every source on a case page is a live outbound link, which is also why sources are never placed behind our paywall.
Archived copies
Where a source is at risk of disappearing, we rely on the Internet Archive rather than hosting a copy ourselves. A dead link with a capture date and a public archive entry is still evidence, and it stays under the archive's own terms rather than ours.
Rights holders
If you hold rights in material you believe we have used beyond fair quotation, write to copyright@themachinerecord.com with the case reference and the material in question. Target response is five working days.
Removing a quotation does not remove the case: we will re-describe the event in our own words with the link intact, because the event is a fact and the wording is yours.
