Terms of service
Plain terms for an informational service. Read the licensing section if you plan to use the data in your own product.
Effective 3 August 2026
What this service is
The Machine Record is an informational resource: a register of documented incidents involving commercial physical robots, provided as is.
It is not legal, insurance, investment or safety advice, and nothing here is a recommendation about any company or product. Decisions taken on the basis of this data are yours. The escalation index is a computed metric with a published formula, not an assessment of how safe a product is.
Using the public data
The public register is free to read and to quote with attribution to The Machine Record and a link to the case. Cite it the way you would cite any source.
Case metadata is published under CC BY 4.0, which permits redistribution, resale, model training and commercial use, with attribution. These terms do not take that back; an earlier version of this page listed those uses as prohibited, which contradicted the licence and has been corrected.
What the licence does not cover, and what you may not do:
- present the data as your own research, or drop the attribution
- redistribute the quoted text of the source articles, which is not ours to license
- scrape the site when the open endpoint will serve you faster
Pro, export and API
- licence
- Internal use by the subscribing organisation.

- Resale, redistribution, or embedding the dataset in a product sold on.

Accounts and payment
Access is by email link, so we hold no passwords. Subscriptions renew until cancelled and can be cancelled at any time, remaining active to the end of the paid period. See refunds for the details.
Card payments are not switched on yet. When they are, they will be processed by WayForPay and we will never receive or store card details. For organisations that pay by bank transfer, an invoice route is available at checkout.
Availability and changes
We do not promise uninterrupted availability. Cases can be corrected, marked as disputed, or withdrawn as evidence changes, which is the point of a maintained register rather than a defect in it.
Material changes to these terms are published here with a new effective date, and previous versions remain available.
Liability
To the extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim arising from the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim.
