Keep the record open
The register is free to read, free to download and free to build on: 256 cases, every source archived, CC BY 4.0, a keyless API and a weekly digest. It is run by one person and paid for by subscriptions and dossiers. Sponsorship buys twelve months of the work that keeps it that way, and nothing else.
The rules, before the levels
- Sponsors have no say over what is published, corrected or removed. The editorial policy applies to them as to anyone else
- A company that appears in the register, or that makes or operates the machines it covers, cannot sponsor it. Insurers, law firms, researchers, funders and individuals can
- Every sponsor is listed here with the level paid, unless they ask not to be. There are no anonymous sponsors above Supporter
- Sponsorship is a payment for twelve months, not a subscription: nothing renews by itself
- If a sponsor later appears in the register as a party to a case, the sponsorship is refunded pro rata and the listing removed
What the money does
Collection in ten languages, verification of every case against two independent sources, the archive copy of every source, the NHTSA file joined into one row per crash, the open data mirrors and the right of reply for every company named. A Supporter covers about a month of that. Read how the work is done on the methodology page and what it has found on the statistics pages.
